IT WAS the middle of the Civil Rights movement in 1964, and America
was picking sides. Some ran for the middle.
But Matthew Feldman, then mayor of Teaneck, had the moral clarity
to know exactly where he wanted to be. He lined up with Martin Luther
King Jr. and others who shared the dream of racial tolerance. He led a
campaign that put Teaneck on the map as the first town in America to
voluntarily integrate its public schools.
Mr. Feldman died Monday at the age of 75. He was a fixture ...
