Harking back to former President Richard Nixon's efforts to have a
Marxist scholar fired from Rutgers University in the 1960s, Rep. Robert
G. Torricelli warned Friday that Governor Whitman's plan to ax the
Higher Education Department could open the door for similar threats to
academic freedom.
