The black-eyed bandits stalking North Jersey's neighborhoods aren't
as scary as many people think.

Once considered pesky for rummaging through garbage pails and
vegetable gardens, raccoons have suffered a bad reputation because of
the widespread fear of rabies, according to one animal handler.

Make no mistake, the animals are popular hosts for the virus; their
bad reputation stems from a rabies epidemic that began in 1990.
