Rickets, once consigned to American medical history with diseases
like scurvy and beriberi, has reappeared in Newark. More than 15
children with the bone disease, caused by a lack of calcium and vitamin
D, are being treated by nutritionists at United Hospitals Medical
Center.
Selina Mkandawire, director of the hospital's pediatric nutrition
