August 20 event will commemorate 375 years of African American Heritage.
Williamsburg, Va. -- Three hundred seventy-five years of African American heritage will be commemorated August 20 in a special event at Jamestown Settlement marking the 1619 arrival of the first people of African origin in British North America. "The Arrival, Jamestown 1619: From African to African American" will feature a symbolic landing ceremony and a variety of programs to educate visitors about the history of African Americans and their impact on American culture.
