My most recent adventure in expectant motherhood began in late
September. (Well, it actually began before that, but who's counting? I
wasn't.)
A woman I'd never seen before walked up to me at the checkout
counter of Bed Bath 'N Beyond in Paramus, where I stood with my three
boys. Without preamble she said to me, "My fourth child was a girl."
And then she walked away.
I went home and checked the calendar, and -- lo and behold -- I was
either seriously past cycle or menopausal.
