BASE: Tony Gwynn gets 3,000th hit
MONTREAL, Aug 6 Reuters - Tony Gwynn of the San Diego Padres wasted no time collecting his
3,000th hit tonight, ripping a line single in the top of the first inning at Olympic Stadium.
Gwynn became the 22nd player in major league baseball history to reach the 3,000-hit
plateau when he sent a 1-2 pitch from Montreal Expos rookie righthander Dan Smith past second
baseman Mike Mordecai.
The Padres streamed out of the dugout and onto the field to congratulate their teammate,
who also embraced his mother.
Expos officials immediately removed first base and hustled it into the locker room. Gwynn
