Editor, The Record:

In a recent column, William Raspberry extolled the Edison Project,
schools that will be run for profit. President Bush is lobbying for a
voucher system that would encourage school shopping. On face value,
these ideas have appeal, but they will actually weaken our society.

Rather than oversee and encourage the abandonment of public
education, insightful and courageous leaders should be demanding a
revitalization and a renewed commitment to the public schools.
