There was a time when only a hard core of dedicated anglers fished
our beaches, jetties, and other inshore saltwaters with fly tackle.
Striped bass, bluefish, weakfish, and bonito were the targets.
Other anglers who fished the same waters with spinning or
conventional casting tackle would often wonder why these flycasters
would deliberately handicap themselves with equipment capable of casting
only 80 to 100 feet, thereby making an often difficult sport even
