A TOUGHER SKILLS TEST IS STILL A GOOD IDEA

PARENTS concerned about the controversy over the state's
eighth-grade basic skills test have a right to know how valid its
results are, and whether the students placed in remedial classes because
of their poor test scores should be taken out.

Those are questions that the new education commissioner, Mary Lee
Fitzgerald, must answer if she is to reassure the public of the
legitimacy of the state's testing system.
