Fifty years ago, Tae Yun Kim was born on a lunar hour of a lunar day in a rural village in South Korea. Her arrival as the family's first grandchild was much anticipated because she was predicted to be a boy. So great was their disappointment when she did arrive that "they said I was cursed and that I had brought disaster to the family."

The young girl grew up with an alcoholic father and a family that blamed her for their unhappiness. She watched the aging of her mother and grandmother, of the women in the village who married early, cooked and sewed and mothered for a lifetime, and knew she wanted something different.
