Activists Seek to Ban Kosher Slaughter: European Jews Fight to Preserve. Traditional Methods of Butchering

NEW YORK -- The fight by Europe's butchers for the right to continue producing kosher meat will move to local legislatures after the European Union passed a controversial animal-rights bill with a special clause for kosher slaughtering earlier this month.

In its original form, the bill would have forced meat manufacturers to stun animals before killing them, an act animal-rights activists claim is necessary for humane reasons but which religious leaders say goes against halacha, or Jewish law.
