MOSCOW -- The first Jewish woman elected to the Russian parliament is spending the legislature's opening session struggling to be heard, warring with ultranationalist Vladimir Zhirinovsky and battling with the Jewish community, which is accustomed to taking a low political profile.
The election of Alla Gerber, a long-time democratic activist and outspoken anti-fascist, is significant because she is the first parliamentarian who is not only openly committed to Jewish affairs, but aggressively fighting to persuade the government to legislate minority representation and protection.
