For China's biggest rock star, music is not a simple thing: Cui Jian will. give his premiere United States performance at Bumbershoot

Cui Jian doesn't like talking about politics.

But when you're a musician in the People's Republic of China and your business is rock-and roll, the questions inevitably surface, again and again.

"Western reporters are always asking about my lyrics and politics," Jian said through a translator in a telephone interview from Beijing. "But the music is the most important thing. They never listen to the music. The words follow the music."
