Roach's `JuJu': Serious Fun At Lincoln Center.
Those of us who witnessed Max Roach's "JuJu" in its debut performance at Aaron Davis Hall in Harlem were simply overwhelmed. If memory serves correctly, my personal remark to him was that the opus deserved more extensive audience exposure. The most recent performance presented at Alice Tully Hall as a segment of Lincoln Center's annual "Serious Fun" series was even more exciting.
"JuJu" is a West African fetish piece that also includes a multiplicity of objective symbols. One must consider it a credit to the ingenuity of Roach that he saw fit to explore the many dimensions of "JuJu."
