"I knew I was going to be a single parent during the last two weeks of my pregnancy. I had gone into labor five weeks early, and I told him I was afraid to be alone.

"His response was to sleep with his beeper at his house. He lives in Inglewood, I live in Pomona, and the doctor was in Los Angeles," said Vicki Andrews.

Andrews was right. With the birth of daughter Lindsay ten months ago, she joined one of the fastest growing segments of American population: Black single parents.
