Green-Card replacement plan extended.
Anyone holding a green card issued before 1979 will now have until March to apply for a new card, the Immigration and Naturalization Service officials said this week. The old cards, which must be replaced with new permanent resident alien identification cards, had been scheduled to expire Sept 20.
INS officials said the six month extension was necessary so tat thousands of resident aliens who have not yet applied for cards can do so. In addition, they said the extra time is needed so the agency can process a surge of last-minute applications received in the weeks before the former deadline.
