The Conference's Conceit.
The Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, familiarly known as the Presidents Conference, is the designated voice of American Jewry. The problem with having such a voice is that once you have it, it wants to be heard, whether or not it has anything of particular interest to say.
It is hard not to sympathize with those who manage the Conference. What a temptation it must be to know that yours is the official voice of the Jewish community. Never mind that most members of that community are not waiting breathlessly to hear what you have to say, don't hear it once you've said it and wouldn't care less even if ...
