American armed forces now occupy Haiti for the first time since U.S. Marines left the island in 1934.

While the media have followed Haiti closely since its first popularly elected president, Jean-Bertrand Aristide, was deposed in 1991, less attention has been paid to the history of the island before Aristide came to power.

This lack persists despite the fact that Haiti's greater history is fundamentally involved in its present-day difficulties.
