Goodbye, Bernadotte.
Kati Marton's new book on the assassination of the first Mideast peace negotiator, Count Bernadotte of Sweden, reminds me of a literary battle I carried on at college. It was over Shakespeare's "The Merchant of Venice." The professors all insisted that Shylock was intended by the great bard to be the play's villain. I kept insisting the old Jew was the hero. Ms. Marton's book is called "A Death in Jerusalem." She clearly intends the villain of the piece to be the most famous of the figures she implicates in the murder of Bernadotte, Yitzhak Shamir.
