It is sometime in the heart of the Great Depression and the poet Charles Reznikoff is finishing off his workday in downtown Brooklyn. A lawyer who never practiced (save for a disastrous defense of a cousin), he is employing his legal skills at the editorial offices of Corpus Juris, publishers of a standard law encyclopedia. Reznikoff sits at a big wooden table across from the same co-worker every business day and writes legal definitions from A to Z, then starts again with A.
