Georges Perec, best known in America for his 1978 novel "Life A Manuel" -- not only a vast literary jigsaw puzzle in its construction of an imaginary apartment building, but an inventory of its rooms, the objects therein and their trajectories through time -- left a list for his friends and literary heirs shortly before his death, in 1982, at 46.
