Science says cocaine vaccine on the way

NEW ORLEANS, Aug. 23 (UPI) _ Researchers say a vaccine against cocaine
could be undergoing human tests within a year.
The vaccine essentially tricks the immune system into attacking cocaine
molecules, which are ordinarily ignored, said chemist Kim Janda of the
Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, Calif.
``We painted a bulls-eye on a cocaine-like molecule,'' Janda said
today. The vaccine causes the immune system to attack both the cocaine
mimic and cocaine itself. He told the national meeting in New Orleans
of the American Chemical Society that he's applying for federal
government permission ...
