During the tumultuous years of 1981-82 when the Fianna Fail government of Charles Haughey limped from one political scandal to another, the embattled Taoiseach (Prime Minister) would often call on his subordinates to go bat for him on radio and television. Usually those misfortunate enough to be chosen were unequal to the task and resorted to spluttering about media conspiracies against "The Boss," as Haughey was fondly known to his followers.
