Proposition 187 and African Americans: Harmful Shortsightedness.

Whether or not Proposition 187 passed, (and I suspect it did) its implications are ominous. The absence of strong opposition to the "Save our State" proposition by African Americans was especially disturbing. With the notable exceptions of SCLC's executive director, Joe Hicks, Urban League's president, John Mack and a group of concerned clergy, African American leadership was conspicuously silent on Proposition 187, Many community and political leaders did officially oppose Proposition 187, but thereafter, did virtually nothing to disseminate, or otherwise support the measure.
