SAN FRANCISCO -- Being the last governor of Hong Kong, the Right Honorable Christopher Patten applauded Hong Kong's free-market economy and predicted a bright and optimistic future of Hong Kong after its reversion to the Chinese rule in 1997, on his first official visit to the west coast of the United States.

During his week-long visit in Los Angeles, San Francisco and Seattle, Patten reassured Hong Kong's continuation of both economic and political freedom after 1997, at a luncheon attended by more than 700 people at ANA Hotel in downtown San Francisco.
