Arab Comic Strips: Politics of an Emerging Mass Culture.

Arab comic strips appear, not in newspapers, as in the West, but in comic books. The most popular, the Majid, which sells over 150,000 copies, is published by the United Arab Emirates. Egypt's Samir has a circulation of 80,000. However, these comic books reach many more people than these figures would indicate. The comics have a high pass-along rate, and back issues are bound together and resold. Although many comic books are produced by private companies each year, they must be careful of their subject matter or be banished by the governments.
