The Pasig River, the body of water which meanders through the heart of the capital city proper, is biologically dead, according to a study by the Danish International Development Agency (Danida). Unless something is done now to rehabilitate it, it will vanish like the extinct esteros and tributaries that once branched out of it.

The river is dead for one main reason: too much sludge and pollution have made it impossible for living organisms to survive.
