MOSCOW -- The bloody civil war in Chechnya is raising anti-Russian sentiments in the already tense region and threatening to embroil some of the bellicose clans of the mountainous Caucasus, where 30 different nationalities -- among them Ashkenazic, Sephardic and mountain Jews -- reside.
Although only a handful of Jews remain in Grozny, the capital of the breakaway republic of Chechnya, which declared its independence from Russia in 1991, thousands of Jews live in neighboring republics.
