The music of Thelonius Monk has long since become part of the established jazz canon. Any musician who wants to be considered a serious jazz player is expected to know the compositions by this great pianist. The trick is, though, to interpret his pieces in such a manner that they don't sound like mere rote copy.

When veteran alto saxophone player Sonny Fortune decided to do all Monk tunes for his first recording as a leader in 15 years, he knew that he would have to bring something different to the music.
