NJ Governor honors Howard Stern: Highway rest area named after. controversial radio `shock jock'

WHEN A POLITICIAN KEEPS A CAMPAIGN promise the electorate usually cheers. But New Jersey's Filipino American community is less than happy about Governor Christine Todd Whitman's decision to honor her election promise to rename a highway rest stop after radio `shock jock' Howard Stern.

Holding true to a pledge she made during an appearance on Stern's show in 1993, Whitman last week authorized that a plaque bearing his name be installed at a rest stop off Route 295 near Camden in Burlington Country.
