NEW YORK -- A politically liberal construction tycoon, whose company helped rebuild Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty, was tapped as the chairman of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations after a bitter closed-door battle of the nominating committee.

Leon Levy, 71, who is known as a strong advocate of the Middle East peace process with a pro-Labor outlook acceptable to the Rabin government, becomes the first Sephardic chairman in the history of the 50-organization umbrella group.
