Infant mortality rates like night and day.

Marion County's Black infant mortality rate is on a seemingly impenitent rise, according to Marion County Health Department statistics for the first nine months of 1994.

There were 57 Black infant deaths out of 2,647 live births, in 1994. During 1993, there were 56 Black infant deaths out of 3,794.

These numbers are brutal in comparison to the white infant mortality rate for the first nine months of 1994: 6.4 deaths per 1,000 live births. This figure declined from the 8.6 deaths per 1,000 live births in 1993.
