Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy, matriarch of the Kennedy family of Massachusetts, passed away Sunday. She was 104 and died from complications from pneumonia at the family compound in Hyannis Port, on Cape Cod.

"She had a long and extraordinary life and we loved her deeply," said Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, her only surviving son, in a brief statement. "To all of us in the Kennedy and Fitzgerald families, she was the most beautiful rose of all."
