By Asian standards, Malaysia is quite modern. Even westerners are surprised by its civility. Kota Kinabalu, capital of the Malaysian state of Sabah and dubbed KK by locals, is comfortable for the western visitor. Many Malaysians are eager to meet tourists, especially Caucasians. "How do you like Malaysia?" some ask. Others merely smile and wave. Children say "good morning" any time of day. The same welcome is not given to Asian Americans. Instead, they wonder why we don't speak Malay.
