PORTLAND -- While on Broadway in the early 1990s, the defining feature of "Sunset Boulevard" was its massive set presenting a glorious yet Gothic mansion for the lead character, Norma Desmond, to prowl.
Not only was this set draped in grandeur, including central pieces such as a huge pipe organ and stunning central staircase, it also hydraulically lifted to reveal a second scene underneath. This worked well on Broadway, earning Tony awards and drawing good crowds. But on the road, it was too much to move around and handle, causing the first tour of the show to flop from the financial burden.
