Affirmative action debate heats up.

Affirmative action has become a political wedge issue of - as one political observer put it - "nuclear" proportions. With the drafting and subsequent defeat of House Bill 1999 in the state Legislature, which would have dismantled the states affirmative action laws, Washington has been plunged into the national debate over affirmative action.

While everyone seems eager to put their two cents into the debate, it is unclear if they are all talking about the same thing. Just what is affirmative action and why are so many people up in arms about it? THE GREAT SOCIETY
