Seattle teachers file grievance with district over Lunar New Year's. holiday observance: Teacher's union cries foul as district changes policy without prior notification
Alki Elementary School teacher Jeannie Yee celebrated this year's Chinese New Year the same way she has for most of the 15 years she's been teaching P.E. and third grade. Yee took Tuesday, Jan. 31, off from work and spent it with her elderly mother and the rest of her family.
Since the 1970s, the Seattle School District has recognized the Lunar New Year as a religious holiday and paid Yee and other Asian American teachers for the day away from work.
