Searching For A New Generation Of Bobby Fischers.
Silently resting her chin on her hands, Melissa Rosa mapped out moves with her eyes as the soft click of chess pieces sounded around her in the cramped public school classroom.
Carefully, the 10-year-old girl picked up a piece and moved it across the board, glancing at her equally young opponent.
The two are part of a new wave of children, many black or Hispanic, who are taking up a game that was once the preserve of the white middle class.
Now it's being played all over the city, from the crime-scatted South Bronx to the genteel blocks of Manhattan's Upper East Side.
