Belgian Jet Dives to Avoid Plane

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands (AP) -- A Belgian passenger jet plunged 1,000 feet after its instruments indicated it was on a possible collision course with another plane, an air traffic control spokesman said today.

Civil aviation authorities say there was no other plane in the vicinity high above the Netherlands when the incident happened early Tuesday afternoon. They have launched an investigation into the apparent instrument malfunction.

``The pilot reported he had instructions from his airborne collision-avoidance system to descend so he acted quickly,'' said Fred Koenneman of Eurocontrol, the organization that controls air traffic flying ...
