China, Taiwan Relations Souring
TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) -- Just days after Taiwanese President Lee Teng-hui suggested Beijing should deal with Taiwan as a nation and not a part of China, relations between the two appear to be heading toward a new low.
Some believe important bilateral talks could now be canceled, and that Beijing could once again try to intimidate the island with another round of military exercises near Taiwan's shores.
The last time that happened, the United States sent in aircraft carrier battle groups to prevent a confrontation.
