57 Umpires Plan To Resign Sept. 2
PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Major league baseball's umpire union said Wednesday that 57 of its umpires would resign effective Sept. 2, citing long-standing labor grievances.
``The tension is much greater than it's ever been,'' said umpires general counsel Richie Phillips, adding that the remaining 11 umpires would announce their resignations in the next few days.
During a sometimes raucous gathering at a hotel here, Phillips said the 57 umpires in attendance had originally voted to go on strike immediately before changing their vote to instead resign.
