NAACP Chairman William Gibson Ousted; Myrlie Evers-Williams Replaces Him.
The oldest and largest U.S. minority rights organization has sacked its leader, replacing him with the widow of a slain civil rights leader.
The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) ousted chairman William Gibson on Saturday. The Board of Directors then elected Myrlie Evers-Williams, a NAACP field organizer and the widow of Medar Evers.
"It is indeed an emotional time for me. But I can't be emotional for too long," Evers-Williams said. "We have too much work to do. It is time to heal our wounds."
