Ayodhya Judgment Is Welcome, Yet `Weak'.

The Oct. 24 judgment of the Supreme Court of India on the fraught Ayodhya issue is an assertion of the rule of law, a rebuff to the Narasimha Rao government, and in some ways a setback for the Hindu rightwing Bharatiya Janata Party. But it does not go far enough in asserting the primacy of secularism.

The verdict sends out a clear message to India's politicians, in particular to those of the ruling Congress party, that they cannot pass on their political problems to the judiciary and use the courts as a shield behind which to indulge in manipulations calculated to exploit religious sentiments.
