Waiting for Litigation: Controversy Swells Over Beckett's First (But Last) Play

IN what has the potential to become something of a landmark in the theatrical and literary worlds, Samuel Beckett's first full-length play, the previously unpublished Eleutheria, was unveiled in a reading in New York last week. The reading marks the first step towards a sure-to-be-controversial 1996 publication of the work, which pre-dates Beckett's dramatic debut, Waiting for Godot.

An English translation of the French-language play was read to an invited audience of approximately 100 at the home of Barney Rose,t a publisher and friend of the late Beckett since the early 1950s. ...
