Top American Art Going on the Road

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A dozen lots of the greatest American art are hitting the road for three years of crisscrossing the nation while two of the capital's major museums shut down for renovation.

The National Museum of American Art and the National Portrait Gallery share the old Patent Office, which dates back to 1836. Walt Whitman once called it ``the noblest of Washington buildings,'' but even the noble can get run down over time.

So the museums will close in January to finish putting on a new two-acre, $5 million copper roof, repair bursting pipes, open skylights, install better climate control ...
