No $$ for Dr. Chavis as NAACP settles suit.

With the signing of a financial settlement between the NAACP and Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis, the association's former executive director finds himself almost $80,000 in debt to the association, which also now holds a second mortgage on his $500,000 home in Ellicott City as security.

The settlement represented far less than what Dr. Chavis had indicated he would be willing to settle for when he initially brought suit against the NAACP following his abrupt firing in August from the $200,000 post as head of the nation's oldest and largest civil rights organization.
