SAN JOSE (CA) -- Perhaps not as well known in America as other sports, table tennis is the second-most popular in the world, with soccer being number one. Historically, Asians have excelled in this sport and, presently, team players from China rank number three in the world.

Dating as far back as 1926, Japan has held the world championship nine times for single men players, and China has also held it nine times. Among the women, China has held the world championship title 11 times, Japan has had it seven times, and Korea twice.
