'Sleeping Beauty' Ballet Opens

NEW YORK (AP) -- A production of ``Sleeping Beauty'' that was close to the 1890 original opened the Kirov Ballet's two-week season at the Metropolitan Opera House. And it is beautiful -- cleanly directed, elegantly costumed and splendidly danced.

Monday night's audience didn't seem to mind that ``The Sleeping Beauty'' now lasts four hours and contains a lot of mime, or that there were more people on stage than in any other contemporary ``Sleeping Beauty'' production -- 135, with 72 in the Act 1 garland dance.
