Tony Gwynn Returns to Padres Lineup
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) -- Eight-time NL batting Tony Gwynn, who is closing in on 3,000 career hits, returned to the San Diego Padres' lineup Monday night after missing 41 of his team's last 48 games with an injured left calf.
Gwynn, 39, wore special shoes without spikes to relieve pressure on his legs. He was used as San Diego's designated hitter in an interleague game against the Anaheim Angels at Edison International Field, and batted cleanup for the first time in his career.
Gwynn, who needs 18 hits to reach the 3,000 in his career, went hitless in four at-bats with a walk in a 4-1, 10-inning San Diego ...
